Papers consisting of three generations of the Warren Family: Stephen Warren, Joseph Mabbit Warren, and Walter Phelps Warren. This collection highlights business correspondence of Stephen Warren.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Warren Family papers (MC 14) consist of small amounts of material belonging to three generations of the Warren family. The papers of Stephen Warren are largely related to his role as a director of the Rensselaer & Saratoga Railroad Co. Papers include correspondence related to the Schenectady & Troy Railroad, Saratoga & Washington Railroad and the Rensselaer & Saratoga Railroad Co. The papers of his son Joseph M. Warren consist of school papers and correspondence from family. Joseph M. Warren attended RPI c1830 and later attended Washington (Trinity) College in Hartford, CT. Letters from Joseph M. Warren to his son Walter Phelps Warren during Walter’s boarding school days are also included in this collection.

Collection Historical Note

Stephen Warren, son of Eliakim and Phebe Bouton Warren, was born in Norwalk, CT in 1783. He was a merchant and financier in Troy, NY where the family relocated in 1798. He was a member of the State Legislature in 1823. He died May 9, 1847.

Joseph Mabbett Warren, son of Stephen and Martha Mabbett Warren was born in Troy, NY, January 28, 1813. Warren attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1827. He graduated from the Washington (now Trinity) College, Hartford, CT in 1834. He worked as a clerk in New York for a year and returned to Troy, NY, where he engaged in the wholesale grocery business for several years. He entered the wholesale hardware business in 1840. He was one of the directors of the Bank of Troy and of the United National Bank of Troy, and president of the Bank of Troy 1853-1865. He was a trustee of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He served as mayor of Troy in 1852. He was appointed as a commissioner of the Troy Water Works Company in 1855 and served until 1867, when he resigned. Warren was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress (March 4, 1871-March 3, 1873). He was not a candidate for re-nomination in 1872. He resumed his former business activities in Troy, where he died September 9, 1896.

Walter Phelps Warren, son of Joseph M. and Elizabeth Phelps Warren was born in Troy, NY, June 13, 1841. He was educated at Troy Academy and Walnut Hill School in Geneva, NY. He was worked with his father at J. M. Warren & Company from 1864-1871 and then withdrew to pursue an association with Fuller, Warren & Company later Fuller & Warren Co. manufacturers of stoves and furnaces. He was president of the national Association of Stove Manufacturers of the United States and held numerous board and civic positions in Troy. He died August 8, 1914.
