Historical Note: Edward Fenemore Chillman was born August 26, 1866. He was the son of Philip E. Chillman and Annette Lomas. Chillman's preparatory education began in Philadelpha and his undergraduate education began at Haverford College, but after one year of attendance, Chillman came to RPI, and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in civil engineering in 1888.  Between 1889 and 1911 Chillman was associated with several engineering companies and firms: N.W. Steel & Iron Co., American Bridge Co., Cooper Wigand Co., R.H. Hood Co., Eddy Valve Co., and the Westside Structural Co. Chillman's duties and professional affiliations with these companies were as draftsman, designer and construction work. Civic organizations for which Chillman was a member include the Rensselaer Society of Engineers, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, and the Society for  the Promotion of Engineering Education. In 1888 Chilllman joined the Rensselaer faculty as Assistant in Descriptive Geometry, Stereotomy and Drawing.  He worked his way up through the ranks, eventually becoming a full professor in 1917, and was named Professor Emeritus in 1938.  Professor Chillman remained a member of the Rensselaer faculty for 48 years.
